Moonbase is the man pushing Australian bass music to new heights.
Dark, grimy and custom made for darkly-lit dancefloors, the Moonbase brand of bass rolls together influences from grime, hip-hop, juke and beats.
It’s industrial yet melodic, always forward-thinking and not afraid to trade an aggressive bassline for arpeggiated synths. As Sydney producer Nick Luke - FKA Moonbase Commander - tells it, it’s music born out of playing weird, underground warehouse parties.
And the right people are paying attention: Moonbase’s 2015 collaboration with New York MC Cakes Da Killa was named ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork, while Skrillex’s tastemaking Nest HQ blog stepped up to premiere both his recent Orthodox EP and last year’s single Southpaw.
Locally, Moonbase has aced primetime sets at both Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, and committed to pushing music that innovates with the launch of his own label Trench Records.
